The 1st novel from author of the phenomenal Hot Zone is the ultimate serial killer nightmare. In 1969, in the Pacific, the US embarked on mass trials of some of the most lethal biological weaponry ever invented; genetically engineered viruses that kill in 3 days. One particle of virus is all it takes. The mortality rate is 100%. 1 kilo of agent could kill the world. The results were so frightening the research was stopped. But just like the viruses it produces technology spreads and sometimes the wrong people get it...In 1998, in New York, a 17 year old High school student wakes up with a cold. 4 hours later she is writhing on the floor of her classroom racked by convulsions, trying to chew off her own fingers. Minutes later she is dead. Across the city the body of a homeless man is bought into hospital; his spine bent in an impossible 'c', he has bitten o ff his own lips, tongue and fingers. How can the 2 incidents be realted? As more people die it's a question that investigator Alice Austen from the centre of disease control needs an answer to fast. No one has heard of this disease before, it's caused by a virus that is just too efficient to be natural. It would take a scientific genius to design such a killer. A genius bordering on madness. A madness born of the belief that there are just too many people in the world. If Alice fails in hr hunt for the killer there will be no one left to kill...

Seller's Description:
-1. Outline: -The Barnes & Noble Review December 1997 The Cobra Event is a petrifying fictional account of a very real threat: biological terrorism. Seventeen-year-old Kate Moran wakes one morning to the beginnings of a head cold but shrugs it off and goes to school anyway. By her midmorning art class Kate`s runny nose gives way to violent seizures and a hideous scene of self-cannibalization. She dies soon after. When a homeless man meets a similarly gruesome-and mystifying-fate the Centres for Disease Control in Atlanta sends pathologist Alice Austen to investigate. What she uncovers is the work of a killer a man who calls himself Archimedes and is intent on spreading his deadly Cobra virus throughout New York City. A silent crisis erupts with Austen and a secret FBI forensic team rushing to expose the terrorist. Even more frightening than Preston`s story about the fictitious Cobra virus however is the truth that lies beneath it. As the author writes in his introduction "The nonfiction roots of this book run deep....My sources include eyewitnesses who have seen a variety of biological-weapons installations in different countries and people who have developed and tested strategic bio weapons." In fact the only reason The Cobra Event was not written as nonfiction is that none of Preston`s sources would go on record. Woven throughout the novel are sections of straight nonfiction reporting that reveal the terrifying truth about the development of biological weapons and the clandestine operations of Russia and Iraq. Three years of research and more than 100 interviews with high-level sources in the FBI the U.S. military and the scientific community went into The Cobra Event. The result is sure to shock you. -> the publisher of this HARDBACK book is Orion Books Limited The date of this copy is 1998 booksalvation have grade it as Poor and it will be shipped from our UK warehouse This book is from the Series. Another of Preston's "can't put down" stories. He is probably the best - or at least most readable - writer on the subject of diseases and bio-weapons. Well researched.

The Cobra Event
This is a very intense book! A crazy man creates a horrible virus in his apartment, using caterpillars and a mix of viruses. He then releases it onto unsuspecting people.
This book reads like a non-fiction book, even though its a fictional tale. The author writes about these occurrences as if they've already happened, which makes it a lot scarier.
