Mickey Spillane type mystery
This is the first book I read by James Lee Burke who was described as the next Raymond Chandler of mystery and crime genre. Dixie City Jam backdrop is the sultry, sensuous city of New Orleans. The main story revolves around Dave Robicheaux, a detective with the Iberia Sheriff's Office, who discovers a sunken WW II Nazi U-boat in local Gulf waters. There are myriad of subplots involving drug deals, prostitution, mobsters and crooked cops. The eventual solution to each dilemma that confronts Detective Robicheaux is handled masterfully by Burke. He definitely has a gift for story telling, colorful characters, realistic dialogue and vividly painted settings. His style of writing is a cross between Mickey Spillane and Dashiell Hammett. I look forward to reading many more of his books.
