E.L. Doctorow's treatment is as usual right on target. It's fascinating to read about the brothers, like standing invisible as their lives develop into this strangest of lifestyle. Doctorow has a talent for getting into lives objectively so the reader may decide for themselves what the characters are about.

E. L. Doctorow' can interpret the most sensitive parts within mind and heart of the ordinary person or the greatly advantaged.
Doctorow tells the true story of two brothers who struggle with the world outside of their New York City mansion and the one being slowly created inside, driven by physical handicaps and psychological pain.
