SYNOPSIS: The comprehensive text and the range and detail of the illustrations make this an ideal guide to Canvas Work for both the beginner and the experienced worker. Jennifer Gray first of all discusses equipment, transferring the design, the use of graph paper and the framing and stretching of work. Next she describes the various types of canvases that are available, their merits and disadvantages: 20 of those most commonly used are illustrated and described in detail. She goes on to deal with the variety of yarns suitable for Canvas Work, showing how different yarns produce very different effects. In the next section she suggests a variety of sources for design, illustrating some interpretations of these by notable Canvas Work designers. The major part of the book is devoted to stitches. Over 130 are described, including not only all the well-known, traditional ones, but also many new varieties invented by the author. Each stitch is explained by means of step-by-step instructions and diagrams, and for each a photograph of finished work shows the appearance of the made-up stitch. Jennifer Gray teaches at the Regional College of Art, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire. She is the author of Machine Embroidery: Technique and Design, published by Batsford.
