A middle-grade reader, this is a great kid's book. It came out decades ago but is still vibrant and compelling. Gilly is a foster child with a giant chip on her shoulder but she finally finds her match in Trotter, a fat, sloppy, messy lady who understands unhappy kids. Touching and moving.

Many View and Many Uses
One of my college professors used this book to teach reading strategies, and read a chapter to us each day. We sat rapt like youngsters at our elementary-school teacher's feet! The topics are relevant to today's youth and deal with age-old issues such as racism, unfit parents, finding a place to fit in, and coping with life in general. I highly recommend it for children and adults.
