I discovered Meyer's work when I picked up the first part, The Water Mirror. I immediately found and read The Stone Light, second installation. Only then was I horrified to find that the third segment of the story had not yet been translated from the original German. I even bought a translation of The Water Mirror by someone other than Elizabeth Crawford--it had a different title, but the same author listed. Crawford's translation was superior to the other. Her work flow like the water in ancient Venice. I don't know how one learns to take ideas and words from one way of thinking, one language, and transpose them into English--a stilted and awkward language at best. Crawford's intelligent, gifted translation releases the story to a language that is musical to read. The mythical, fantastic beings in The Glass Word made perfect sense as I read through the book. It is a series that I will re-read again and again.
