Last year, a teacher's magazine recommended this book as a great "beginning of the year book" for starting the school year. One of my reading classes read this book and the other class read another recommended book. "A Year of Miss Agnes" was far more engaging with realistic characters who "grow" throughout the story. The story reflected meaningful ideas about learning and portrayed a positive relationship between students and teacher. Not only did it get readers involved, it also connected well with our fourth grade social studies curriculum (Native Americans, Alaska) as well as our focus on fiction (realistic/historical).
