In this well-written novel, Kim McLarin, a black female writer, gives balance to both parties in her thoughtful examination of the interracial relationship. From our introduction to the characters in a racially tense Los Angeles street scene, to their accidental reuniting in the newsroom of a Philadelphia newspaper, through all the tentative steps of their establishing a relationship, we see through their different eyes the well-drawn, frank encounters with realities such a couple must face. Prejudices among family, friends, and onlookers of both races, and their effects on the lovers, are laid bare. The struggles with their personal prejudices do not happen in step and threaten to destroy the relationship entirely. Ultimately, however, they are forced to acknowledge the depth of their love. Armed with a candid understanding of the complications of their relationship, they recommit, leaving us with the recognition that an as yet unknown story lies ahead.
