Later at the helm of his vast plane called the Flying Cathedral he became "the British public's chief and best showman of flight". After his death in a spectacular crash he was accorded a full military funeral by the King, and remains the first civilian and only cowboy to lie alongside some of the greatest heroes of British military history.
