Fool's Gold is a good read with enough plot twists to keep it interesting. The descriptions of the northern wilderness of Ontaria add the lure of the north country to the plot. Reid Bennet's very cool and well trained dog, Sam, adds a twist and an appeal unique to this small town police chief who starts out doing a favor and gets embroiled in a deeper mess than he imagined. As a Viet Nam vet, Reid's jungle patrol skills are essential. In the course of solving the mystery, Police Chief Gallagher changes from go with the flow, cynical, burnt out pre retired attitude to being a great team mate for Reid and showing "cop smarts" and a large amount of courage. This book made we want more by this author.
