V. S. Pritchett was one of the most generous insightful and book reviewers of the 20th century. The books and writers reviewed in this book date from the 17th century to our times
He was also one of the best writers - a true master of the short story and the literary essay.
Anyone who enjoys good writing and good reading should relish this book.
I can't say how many books I have read because of what he said in these essays, but it has to been a great many and have been disappointed by the choices I have made.
