Best Destiny tells the story of the teenage years of James Kirk and his first voyage in space. Wanting to put his son on the right track, George Kirk decides to take his son out into space on a small Federation space craft. This small space craft is captured by Rex and Roy Moss, a father and son team in charge of a band of pirates and smugglers; this band of thugs is stationed on a much larger space craft used to salvage parts from other vessels. Rex and Roy Moss are not initially aware that the craft they have captured has a crew from Starfleet. However, the Moss team is in for an unpleasant surprise as they come to grips with George Kirk, his son, and the other capable members of the Starfleet crew. The Starfleet crew eventually brings the pirates to justice. In the process, James Kirk learns about teamwork and sacrifice. The book ends with James Kirk applying directly to Starfleet Academy and bypassing the preparatory school.
The version of Best Destiny described in this review is an abridged audio version. Thus, some of the details of the original story are left out. However, the sound effects, music, and voice characterizations by the talented James Doohan make the audio version a real pleasure to listen to in your home or car. Also, the major characters are well-developed in this story. I have not read the book, but I really enjoyed the audio version of Best Destiny. Highly recommended.

I love this book!
This book is a must read for any original Star Trek fan. It tells the story of a young James Kirk and a turning point in his attitude about life and responsibility. Diane Carey deals with the hardships of becoming an adult in the fantastic Star Trek universe. Her storytelling is wonderful, as usual, and the book moves along quickly, making you hold your breath along with the characters in danger. One of the best things about the story, in my opinion, is that she uses two teenagers coming from two different backgrounds, dealing with the same issue, wanting respect from their elders, and how they both deal with how to get what they want. Wonderful read for anyone, but a great insight into the beginnings of a Star Trek legacy!
