I have read Democracy several times over the years and I'm always impressed with new things I find in it. And it is pretty phenomenal how much Didion can convey with relatively few words. But what I really love about this novel is the way I feel as Didion gets me to piece together almost with her the story of Inez and Jack. There is this haunting sense of both personal alienation and dissolutionment in a world and time that promised so much and delivered something else. And is this betrayal merely around us or is it in us? But for a few brief shining moments, jack and Inez do dare to try to put it together and that is so cool.
