In the Old South of the 1930s, when a gentle giant of a man is sentenced to death for the murder and rape of two little girls, the fact that he is Black and the girls are white is inflammatory enough, but the situation is further complicated by his near muteness and gift for healing.

When it first appeared, one volume per month, Stephen King's The Green Mile was an unprecedented publishing triumph: all six volumes ended up on the New York Times bestseller list--simultaneously--and delighted millions of fans the world over. Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with "Old Sparky, " Cold Mountain's electric chair. Prison guard Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working the Mile. But he's never seen anyone like John Coffey, a man with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity. In this place of ultimate retribution, Edgecombe is about to discover the terrible, wondrous truth about Coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs...and yours. Stephen King is the O. Henry Award-winning author of more than thirty books, including The Shining, The Stand, The Green Mile, and the stories on which the Academy Award-nominated films Carrie, Stand by Me, and The Shawshank Redemption are based. His most recent volume in the Dark Tower series is Wizard and Glass. He lives in Bangor, Maine, with his wife, novelist Tabitha King.
He's written so many (I'm a little over halfway through the lot) and it is so difficult to come up with a favorite, but if pressed, this would be the one. I had seen the movie, thought it was okay, but the pace and depth of the characters in the book...everything was just right to make it a wondrous tale of epic proportions. I gave the book to my Dad as an introduction to Stephen King, with some trepidation, but that was unwarranted, because not only did he read the whole thing, when he got done, he started right back in on page one for a repeat performance. How much better of a recommendation could there be?

"Green Mile" the masterpiece of Stephen King
If you watched the movie first, and then found out it was based off of a Stephen King book, your reaction was probably a lot like mine: Huh? Is there supposed to be an evil monster in here somewhere? It's Stephen King right, isn't that what he writes about? Now granted, I had never really read a King novel at that point, but I knew I just had to read "The Green Mile" after seeing the movie. Let me tell you: the movie does the book no justice. Don't get me wrong: the movie is probably one of the best adaptations of a book I have ever seen. But the book... the book moves you. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you angry. There's very few book I can say that about, and I don't want to sound cliche'. But this book is just that good. King will always be remembered for his horror novels, but I believe that "The Green Mile" should be remembered as his crowning achievement.
