Arguing from the nature of thought at large and the conditions under which it develops, as well as from a partial acquaint ance with parallel eras in other civilizations than our own, the writer is of the opinion that conclusions similar to those which have here been drawn would hold good of transitional eras generally. But since, for the most part, the thesis defended is discussed with primary reference to the progress of European or Western civilization, the results of the inquiry fully apply to this alone.
