Excerpt from Sacharissa: Some Account of Dorothy Sidney, Countess of Sunderland, Her Family and Friends, 1617 1684 The pictures of her which Vandyke painted, as she appeared to Waller in the bloom of her youthful loveliness, adorn the walls of more than one ancient and stately house. At Penshurst, at Althorp, at Petworth, we see her under many forms and in many different costumes and always, as Horace Walpole said, charmingly handsome. But the pathos of her brief married life has invested her with a deeper charm than either poet or painter's art. For this moumful tale, and for the story of her varied and changeful lot, we must turn to con temporary records. There we see her, as she appeared in the eyes of the men and women of that generation, who knew her in turn as daughter, wife, and mother, as sister and as friend. One and all bear witness to the same perfections of body and mind. Wit and discretion, writes Dorothy Osborne, no mean judge of her own sex, were reconciled in her person, that have so seldom been persuaded to meet in anybody else.
