If you want a clear textbook and reference guide on scientific principles, then you will find Elements of Natural Philosophy by William Holms Chambers Bartlett most helpful. Bartlett was a professor of Natural Philosophy, Mechanics and Astronomy at West Point Military Academy. He produced his own textbooks, which were designed to encompass the total knowledge students would need in the particular field of study. Elements of Natural Philosophy is structured to impart maximum knowledge on its readers. Every page has brief notes in the margins, creating an ongoing index of subjects. Subject names and definitions are often in italics so that students can focus on the main themes of the text and there are illustrations, tables, equations and charts to further elucidate the concepts. The first part of the book deals with the Mechanics of Solids and explores concepts like space, time and motion. The basics, such as the definition of inanimate objects, are explained first, and then the sections grow more complex. When readers have a solid foundation in mechanics, then Bartlett discusses machinery like pendulums, screws, wheel and pulleys, and levers. The second part of the book is about the Mechanics of Fluids. Once the scientific principles of fluids are explained in full, Bartlett shows the student how the principles are applied in machines and tools such as air pumps, siphons, and pipes, among many other examples. As a professor, Bartlett was best remembered for his lessons and writings on analytical mechanics. Mechanical principles are thoroughly defined in Elements of Natural Philosophy , which is an excellent textbook and must read.
