Thefc hre certain attempts at the formation of roads under the Thames. The. Great dillancetwhich the inhabitants of Gravcfend and Gray's Thurrock, and the neighbouring parts, have to travel, viz. Round by London-bridge, to communicate with each other by land, gave rife, in May 1798, to the propofition for a tunnel, or arched road, under the Thames, from Gravefend, on one fide of the river, to Tilbury -fort, on the' other. For this purpofe was (con fubfcribed. The engineer propofed his arch tohc a cylinder, of 16 feet in diameter. The attempt was made but either through the 'ignorance of thofe who undertook the talk, or from other caufes, it completely failed. In the year 1805 an at was pall'ed for making other archways under the Thames, for the paffage of carriages and foot pallengers, between Rotherhithe and Limehoufe. It was intended to link a (haft on one {hore of the Thames, ' with a {team-engine, &c. And to continue the fame to afufiicient'dif'tanoc, at which to begin the tunnel in oppofite directions, riling to the fhoreof the river one way, and to a point fuificiently inland the other way, for a regular and proper afcent for carriages. This, like many other projects of the prefent'day, was undertaken by needy ad venturers on the one part, and by rich fpeculators on the other, without fu icient examination, and has likewife mifcarried.
