The migration of the population from country to town, ' the Re gistrar-general writes, has been'in active Operation since the census of 1861; and the rate of increase in the town population of England and Wales has been, in many cases, so exceptionally great as to render any estimate of town pcpu lation at the present time unreliable. The estimated popu lation in the middle of 1870, in each of the twenty largest towns of the United Kingdom, is as follows. In several cases the estimate has only been arrived at after careful local enquiry.' [see Table on next page.
