Excerpt from Proceedings of the General Court Martial Convened for the Trial of Commodore James Barron, Captain Charles Gordon, Mr. William Hook, and Captain John Hall, of the United States' Ship Chesapeake: In the Month of January, 1808 And whereas by the opinion aforesaid, of the court aforesaid, it doth also appear, that the guns of the Chesa peake were never exercised before she proceeded to sea - that her crew were quartered but a few days previous to that time; and had never been called to quarters more than three times prior to her sailing for sea -tl1at some of the guns of the said frigate Chesa peake weie not securely titted in their carriages -tl1at some of her spunges and wads were too large - that but few of her powder horns were filled - that her matches were not primed, - and that some of her ram meis were not in their proper places - that her marines were not supplied with enough cartridges; and that none of those which they had were of the proper size and whereas the court aforesaid, in the commendationthey have passed, upon the (other officers of the ship.
