A great beginner's book
Tana Hoban's books are more like photographic essays or concept books. This one is page after page of familiar street signs for early readers to become familiar with. My two- and four-year old can now spot all of these signs when we are out and about and "read" them to me. No, they can't really read yet, but recognizing familiar patterns of letters and knowing what they mean is an important part of pre-reading, so they tell me. Well, whatever - my kids recognize Stop, Bike Route, Railroad Crossing, Taxi, Push, Pull, Open, Closed, and other familiar signs on sight. This is a great book to get a very young child used to the concept of a book, and a fun one as the child gets older. A great pick.
