I enjoyed this one as much as the first. I loved all the John Hughes stuff and the Lord of the Rings. These are both things I love. Wade kinda made me mad at first. I loved getting to see the characters I loved from the first book. I would recommend this.

A huge letdown
Oh, no. I really enjoyed Ready Player One, though at the time I was just getting back into reading and was realllllly nice with my ratings, so I think it was maybe more of a 4 than a 5. But anyway. I was excited for this one, and I don't know that I could be more let down.
Wade sucks, and we all knew this, but for some reason in this one, it was all that was happening in the beginning and I was cringing at *everything* he was doing. He starts off discussing his search for the seven shards (a new quest) and it takes 40% or so of the book for him to find the first one and to meet his new "powerful rival" mentioned in the synopsis. I was. So. Bored. He sits there doing uncomfortable things with his invisibility cloak. Then new rival shows up, action starts happening, and...I low-key hated it? Wasn't a great rival, not a lot of interest is happening, though there is some added focus on how quickly the shards need to be found. Everything was too easy and full of "aha! I happen to have this item that solves this exact problem!" and I get they're inside a virtual world, and that's kinda how it works but mehhhh. The end, was even worse. I wish the last few pages hadn't even happened.
I almost DNFd it, and if you're on the fence, I would let it go, I don't feel like it got that much better.
