Today, more than a century after the death of the three Bront sisters, the highly individual and poetic flavour of their work attracts an increasing number of readers from all round the world. Phyllis Bentley, herself a Yorkshirewoman and one of the leading authorities on the Bronts, suggests that their peculiar quality - 'a unique blend of poetry with prose ... of realism with romance' - resulted from the fusion in their natures of their Celtic heredity (an Irish father and a mother from Cornwall) with their Yorkshire environment. The wild and beautiful moors of the West Riding of Yorkshire which surrounded and isolated Haworth Parsonage, played a vital part in their novels and Emily's masterpiece Wuthering Heights owes both its setting and its characters to the moors. 'Emily, a major poet who is also the author of a superb masterpiece of fiction; Charlotte, a novelist of strong and original genius; Anne, a writer of clear if somewhat pallid talent - it is a remarkable trio to come from one family resident in a remote moorland parish in days when female education had hardly begun, ' concludes Bentley. Phyllis Bentley, who was herself a distinguished novelist, is a former member of the Bront Society Council. She edited the Heather edition of the Bront novels, and her critical work includes The Bronts (1947), The Bronts and their World (1969) and the PEN booklet, The English Regional Novel .
