This is a classic tale of a lone engineer, and his mega company, who has big ideas and delivers big projects. In the process we learn about the "space elevator" in the first major book to describe this possibility. The edition I read has a forward that brings the story up to date on recent scientific progress. A book of ideas, that has held up over time.

A Great Book
This is one of Arthur C Clarke's best books, I am not saying that any of his book's are not good they are all Great and to me Arthur C Clarke is one of the best book writer's ever.
This book does start off slow but then starts pulling you in as if you are there.
In the 22nd century visionary scientist Vannevar Morgan conceives the most grandiose engineering project of all time, and one which will revolutionize the future of humankind of space: a Space Elevator, 36,000 kilometres high, anchored to an equatorial island in the Indian Ocean.
