The author breaks down the book into four parts. The first part tales about the island typography, the thoughts of the American intelligent, the commanding officers of both forces and the intentions before the invasion. This was the most interesting part because it gives a back ground of information that is normally not presented on both the American and Japanese forces. The information not only extends to the tactical strategies but to the personal thoughts of the commanding officers before the invasion. The second part tales of the invasion. Giving first hand information from the actual participants in the American invasion force. The author describes their anticipation, fears, determination and their hope of coming out alive. The third part talks about the tactical movements in taking Mt. Suribachi and the carnage that ensued with black and white photos to reinforce the written word. The fourth part talks about the last stand of the Japanese army and the mind set of the officers and men knowing that the end is near and their hope for reinforcements that never came. At the end there is account of those who gave their lives and some of the effect it had on their comrades and the people at home.
