Now, full-bodied and richly-peopled, Flowers for Algernon is the daring novel of a startling human experiment! -and-Flowers for Algernon made its first appearance in print as a short story which was widely anthologized and translated internationally. It received further acclaim as a memorable television drama, and was rapidly purchased for film production. Then, enlarged and richly peopled, Daniel Keyes' haunting story became an award-winning novel--recipient of the Nebula Award for the Best Novel of the Year by the Science Fiction Writers of America. This fascinating tale of a daring human experiment has been described as "a love triangle between two people, " "a suspenseful, gripping story, " and "a brilliant fantasy." It is all these things. It is one of the most strikingly original and engrossing novels of our time! Daniel Keyes was born in Brooklyn and received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Brooklyn College. He has been a merchant seaman, ship's purser, fiction editor and high school teacher. At the present time, Mr. Keyes is on the English faculty at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Flowers for Algernon made its first appearance as a magazine story in 1960 and won the Hugo award that year for the best science novelette. It was then a television drama, is here enlarged to novel length, and is also the basis for a motion picture. Mr. Keyes is also the author of a second novel, The Touch.

Ordered for Book Club
I personally did not enjoy this book. It was cleverly written. I like my books to have a little more action. Others in the book club rated this a little more highly as it dealt with feelings and emotions.

Indescribably original, moving piece of fiction.
Meet Charlie Gordon. He is just like you and me, set aside the fact that he was born with a very low IQ. The novel flows as his personnal journal entries, as he is ultimetly chosen for an expirimental brain sugery to increase his intelligence. Follow along his amazing journey through his world, and you will forver be touched. See through his eyes, in this suspensful and unbelievable tale of love, learning and loss. Charlie Gordon will be a character, not soon forgotton. This will be a novel that will be read from generation to generation.
