Pictures are Better Than Words
I like Louis L'Amour, like him a lot. But this photographic exhibition of America would have been far better had someone else written the captioning for those pictures. That is my opinion. In later years Louis L'Amour became too "preachy" with his philosophy of life and such like subjects. He didn't let the story tell how he felt; he would just blurt it out--time and time again in his last books. Granted, his early westerns were his best--with a few exceptions written later on. I know this is not a novel, nor fiction; it is a travelogue of stunning pictures with stories told about those pictures, and I still believe the essays would have been done better by someone else. I have had a copy of this book for many many years--since 1995--about ten years after it was published. I look at it from time to time and wonder what might have been....If you enjoy Louis L'Amour go ahead an purchase this book to add to your collection of his work; it is good enough to own--just not his best work.
