Not an easy read if one isn't familiar with European medieval history.
It is one of Georgette Heyer's earlier work, it is not one of her charming books we read and re-read.

Not the Usual Georgette Heyer Novel
I've enjoyed Georgette Heyer's Regency romance novels for many years because they're well written, intelligent, and often funny. This is an early historical novel of hers and while different from her later "romance" novels, certainly demonstrates her ability to do research and create a believable setting. I liked it. It reminded me of the good old derring-do books I grew up reading--and still read when I get the chance.
