The Skeptical Environmentalist challenges widely held beliefs that the environmental situation is getting worse and worse. The author, himself a former member of Greenpeace, is critical of the way in which many environmental organisations make selective and misleading use of the scientific evidence. Using the best available statistical information from internationally recognised research institutes, Bjrn Lomborg systematically examines a range of major environmental problems that feature prominently in headline news across the world. His arguments are presented in non-technical, accessible language and are carefully backed up by over 2500 footnotes allowing readers to check sources for themselves. Concluding that there are more reasons for optimism than pessimism, Bjrn Lomborg stresses the need for clear-headed prioritisation of resources to tackle real, not imagined problems. The Skeptical Environmentalist offers readers a non-partisan stocktaking exercise that serves as a useful corrective to the more alarmist accounts favoured by campaign groups and the media.

Excellent book on the state of our global environment. Realistic views and data. No alarmist hype. The one small section on how much garbage we really make was an eyeopener. Also a good solid explanation of the Kyoto Protocols. This type of reading would be wonderful for our school children. It would help counter all the foolishness about the environment that most of the media bombard us with every day.

It changed my mind
This is an excelent book showing important facts on our planet. It uncovers many miths on the present state of the world and gives a realistic view that is necessary for the right decision making which is always a choice of where to put the money. I think this book should be obligatory reading for any person interested on world's environment.

Facts, not hype
This textbook-type book rings true. The author, a statistician, decided to take a look at the claims being made in the media and in blogs about the state of our environment, and in so doing, found that most of the claims were either very biased or based on insufficient data. His overall conclusion is that the earth is in good shape, and offers many suggestions to keep it that way.
I have given copies to both my children (in their 50s), since this will be their world to live in and deal with.
