This is set in the south before slavery was abolished. It is about a spinster whose step father plays match maker with a slave he bought. The slave was a very intelligent English man who was sold to pay for his debts while in England. The step father eventually frees the man after he proves worthy of his intentions. The step father is dying and has decreed in his will that his step daughter will keep everything as long as she marries this man who was once their slave. The woman fights it at first even though she is attracted to him. At first, the Englishman decided to go along with it and thinks when he tires of the sham, he'll sell everything and leave her. So he makes contact with a land buyer and discusses the possibility of selling. Then later, he falls in love and decides to make his life work with her. Then there are attempts on his life which only brings them closer to each other. Then out of the blue this land buyer shows up and uncovers his earlier plans to sell and she pulls away from him because she thinks he wants to sell her land. He then questions again whether he wants to save his marriage or let it go. It is a very good read. Full of deception, romance and twists.
