Der geschiehtliche Stoff, den der Dichter f�r sein Drama in der Chronik vorfand, um fasste kaum ein Jahr der Regierung des K�nigs und liess sich da her bequem ia den Rahmen der Dramatik einspannen, ohne das H�lfsmittel der Epik allzusehr in Anspruch zu nehmen. So sind es eigentlich nur drei hervorragende Momente, welche erzahlt werden, statt scenisch ausgef�hrt zu sein. Dass zum Anfang des Schau spiels die verschiedenen Symptome des Aufruhrs und Widerstandes gegen die kaum begr�ndete Autorit�t des K�nigs Heinrich nur zu sammengefasst und berichtet werden, erinnert an Shakespeare's gleich artige Behandlung des ihm vorliegenden Stoffes im ersten Theile des K�nig Heinrich VI. Und mag zugleich den gewaltigen Fort schritt constatiren, welchen die Kunst des Dichters seit jenem ersten Jugendversuche auf dem Gebiete der historischen Dramen gewon nen hatte. Eine ganze Scene, voll originellster Ansehaulichkeit und Lebendigkeit, wird uns aber in Percy's Vertheidigungsrede (a. Sc. 3) vorgef�hrt. Die Art und Weise, wie er seine Weigerung, die Kriegsgefangenen herauszugeben, aus seinem nat�rlichen Wider willen gegen den hofischen Boten des K�nigs und gegen dessen geckenhafte Manieren zu rechtfertigen sucht, ist so meisterhaft ge schildert, dass wir den Gegensatz zwischen dem kampfm�den Kriegs helden und dem wohlduftenden geleckten Diplomaten mit seinem Abscheu vor Leichengeruch und Pulverdampf auch ohne scenische Darstellung aus dem blofsen Bericht v�llig auffassen k�nnen. Ein drittes episches Element (a. 3, So. 2) ist des Konigs retro spektive Schilderung Seiner berechneten Haltung zur Zeit Richard's II. In gewissem Sinne ein Seitenst�ck zu einer vorher besprochenen Partie des vorigen Dramas; nur dass jene Popularit�tshascherei Bolingbroke's im Munde Richard's eben so geh�ssig dargestellt war, wie der nunmehr gekr�nte Bolingbroke sie wohlgef�llig seinem Sohn� zur Nachahmung empfiehlt und deshalb andere Z�ge an ihr hervor hebt als Richard getkan. Wir sehen, die Verbindung zwischen dem epischen Elemente und dem dramatischen, zwischen den Schil derungen und dem Charakter des Schildernden, wird im Fortschritt seiner Kunst bei unserm Dichter immer inniger und fester gekn�pft.
