Andrew was not simply the foremost statesman of the land, wise, fearless, and energetic, fathoming from the first the meaning of secession, and prompt to: prepare for the shock of war which, with the connivance of the Buchanan administration and the ready sympathy of our European foes, was expect ed to blot us from the roll of nations. To a judgment that no dangers could disturb, a resolution that no difficulties could shake, a love of country which grew in intensity as that country's danger became more imminent, and a vigilance that never slept, he added principles of action so right and pure, that expediency or necessity, those convenient pretexts, left no shadow' on their brightness.
