It was, therefore, admirably adapted to the habits and requirements of a Tartar race. But the circumstances Which led to that great Tartar migration from the rich pas tures round the Sea of Aral to the Grass Steppe on the northern shore of the Euxine could not fail to excite the curiosity of the early philosophic traveller. The national traditions, however, which the Scythians themselves pre served, and those which prevailed amongst the Greek colonists on the shores of the Black Sea, were generally rejected by the more acute critics of olden time; and though we shall have occasion to produce them as speci mens of ancient historic myths, yet we would more par ticularly direct the reader's attention to the following account, which was the most generally received both by the Greeks and the other literary nations of the ancient world.
