In other words, there is a penumbra in fiction beyond which history becomes historical and Time: The Past becomes paster. This is a historical novel. Even though some real people still living walk through its pages, it is not a period novel. Real or fictional, few of these characters had seen a movie or wrecked an automobile, which to me makes them seem as historical as I. Caesar or five-cent beer. They used the words manly and womanly to describe quintessences of sex of which one could be proud, and they picked, fought, and settled a war during a summer vacation, and I think this is historical and maybe even historic. There is no bibliography, since a novelist is a kind of mounte bank who hawks entertainment, not study courses. Footnotes and marginalia belong to the professional historian, who also has bread and honor to earn. If you want to know what's what, ask grandpa - he knows.
