Excerpt from The Charter of the City of New Brunswick of December 30, 1730, and Early Ordinances of the City: With an Appendix The new brunswick historical club, at its Annual Meeting held Thursday, December 19, 1912, authorized the publication of the first Charter of the City of New Brunswick, bearing date December 30, 1730, together with Ordinances thereunder enacted: Manuscript copies of Chart-er and Ordinances, defective in part, are in the possession of the Club. The copy of the Charter lacks only a word or phrase here and there, the manuscript having been worn by repeated folding. The manuscript copy of the Ordinances is worn in places and has lost the outer folios which contained the text of the Ordinances of the first year or eighteen months of the city government and those enacted aft-er Janu ary 1sth, 17 50. The titles of the earliest ordinances are, however, probably all preserved in a subsequent repetition. The date of the first meeting of The Mayor, Recorder, Aldermen and Commonalty of the City of New Brunswick seems to have been March 16, 1731. The editor has thought proper to reproduce, as far as possible in print, the spelling, punctuation (or lack of it), use of capitals and other peculiarities of the manuscript inasmuch as it appears to have been the copy officially prepared. The mls. Copy tho continuous in form is probably incomplete since for example it contains no record of acts of Common Council between the dates, Dec. 24, 173 5, and Oct. 18, 1737.
