In the tradition of Empire of the Sun, a gripping survivor story of one family's flight during World War II In 1942, as war spread in the Far East and the British, Japanese, and Chinese fought ferocious battles on Burmese soil, an eleven-year-old boy and his family found themselves trapped in the path of advancing armies. Told through the eyes of that Anglo-Burmese boy, this is the compelling story of Stephen Brookes, who, along with his family and thousands of other terrified civilians, was forced to flee his home when the Japanese invaded. Packing whatever they could carry on foot, Brookes and his family joined the exodus of refugees abandoned by the civil administration and fled through the dense jungles of Northern Burma toward the Indian border. In this riveting book, Brookes provides an ultimately uplifting account of their terrifying 3,000-mile journey, which lasted eight grueling months and partially destroyed his family. Stephen Brookes (Cambridgeshire, UK) was educated at La Martiniere College in India and has taught in Malaya, served as a soldier in the Indian army, and worked in the oil fields of Borneo.
