Handsome first English edition of this tale first published in Holland in 1965, where it won the Dutch Children's Book Prize. Tipped to front flyleaf is a 5" X 3" slip which the author boldly inscribes and signs in blue ballpoint: "For Mr. Hanlin / to read to his / grandchildren. / from / Paul Biegel / and / Cilia." Biegel (1925-2006) was an important and incredibly prolific Dutch author of children's books. A lovely copy with choice inscription.
