Few people associate Michener with anything other than fiction and that is probably as it should be. He was my favorite author for decades who set the standard for research by a writer. Sports in America is a personal rant by a fiction writer expressing his frustration with trends in sports. In the late 70s this book was a primary force in redirecting my focus in the transition from athlete to coach and administrator. Re-reading the book now 30 years later the book strikes me more as naive than useful. The writer backs his views with plenty of research and statistics which were impressive then, but simply outdated and less meaningful now.
