This debut novel is based on the true story of Carrie McGavock. The author skillfully writes a historical fiction story based on one of the most deadliest Civil War battles in Franklin, Tennessee, that saddens you reading about the horrific loss of lives and the senselessness of this battle. Heed the chapter titles because the narrative viewpoints will change. Hicks is very adept at giving great depth to the main characters. Carrie McGavock is a hero because she gave memory to each life lost. Reading this book has piqued my interest in visiting this area and learning more.

Memorable
One of the best historical fiction books I have ever read about the Civil War. One I'll never forget! I want to go back to Franklin, TN again to visit the setting for this story.

Excellent historic novel dealing with the Battle of Franklin (Tennessee.) This story tells of the sorrows and joys of a Civil War era woman caught in the horror of a battle fought on her family's plantation. Her home was turned into a hospital, and her family cemetery became a cemetery for dead Confederate soldiers. This is a fictionalized version of a historical event, and photographs of the actual heroine, her family, and the graveyard which she established are included in the book.

Interesting read
I am amazed at the way this author set up the book. It was an easy read and anyone who is interested in civil war history would enjoy this book. I found it amazing how this author took the lives and battle and placed truth into a story of fiction. It is very detailed and shows the views of those affected by the battle whether they were citizens or soldiers.

Truth-based Historical Fiction
Robert Hicks imagined the untold story behind one of the most horrific battles of the Civil War and created a story that captures the essence of the time, place, and most importantly, the people who lived it. If you like historical fiction, you should enjoy this book.
