This is a mercifully short book written by a man who seems to be a very nice guy, if not an inspiring author. He writes of his personal philosophy using his love of a fine bull dog as a vehicle to spout all kinds of half-baked, confused and eclectic religious themes. Included are a couple of excellent dog stories, but far too few to make up for the painful pages of ideology.
I tried very hard to think of a person to whom I might recommend this book. The only possibility seems to be a sentimental girl who is considering owning a bull dog. I don't personally know of such a girl, but if I did she would be the kind who falls in love with puppies but who has neither the money nor the dedication to take care of a dog. I would hope that this book would deter her. Many of the medical and training problems associated with this lovable species, that has been so sadly inbred by manipulative mankind, are well-documented here.
If you should happen to think, as I probably do, that a Phoenix radiologist makes an unlikely spiritual guide, then you might not need to know that Dr. Fischer has written a more recent book; but I would certainly give that newer book a second look before judging it. The human mind can grow far and develop much with an additional decade of maturation and work. I hope to see that this has been true for Dr. F. More about that in a future review.
