In 1992 it will be 35 years since the journal Wear was launched. The ever increasing interest in Wear and the increasing flow of material made us decide to celebrate the 35th birthday of Wear with an issue of invited papers in 1992. There have been exciting developments in the wear research in recent times and the invited papers in this special volume reflect these trends. Scientific studies of events controlling wear, friction and lubrication on an atomic or molecular scale are contributing greatly to our understanding of the macroscopic manifestations of tribology. The papers presented in this volume illustrate current trends in studies of basic wear processes in wear, friction and lubrication. Perhaps the outstanding feature of this volume is that it demonstrates that emphasis is now being placed upon studies of interacting surfaces at the atomic or nanometre level rather than the macro or micron level which was dominant in recent decades.
