Whether in Real Life or in Novel, What a Story!
I know some people who were involved in the real life setting which some say inspired this great novel. In some ways the reality was even more sordid and shocking than Baldwin`s novel. (I am not completely persuaded, however, that the correspondence with reality is correct.) Giovanni`s love is so intense, his plight so hopeless, that I don`t see how anyone cannot be moved deeply by this great novel, which accomplishes so much in so few pages!

Not bad
From a student's perspective, this book was not bad at all (yes i was forced to read it, no i did not mind). The main theme of this novel, in my opinion, underscores any dividing factor like sexual orientation or class and adresses the effects of self-hate, an all-too prevalent and indiscriminent epidemic sweeping our society.
