This book has received some unfair reviews such as "by a 14 year old for 14 year olds' . Exactly - it is aimed at a school age audience. In spite of that, I still enjoyed it. Mark was an amazingly determined young man who was fortunate to have parents and a school superintendent, who recognized the educational value of Mark's dream to climb Mt Everest. To be financially and physically ready to climb, Mark had to work out for long hours, cold call sponsors for money, organize his equipment, manage the many plane and train transfers required to get from the USA to Tibet, and cope with many different cultures and languages, tasks I could not do as an adult.
Mark was a full member of the climbing teams he joined - no concesessions were made for his youth. He was very confident on the mountains but uncomfortable dealing with the media and with girls his own age. He details the exhaustive physical and organizational preparation required for each trip.
Mark would be about 30 now, I wonder what he's doing.?
