Still worth reading
Lessing's first novel is an inciteful picture of the destructiveness of Apartheid. Her portrait of Mary, a white woman, obsessed and constrained by the racial protocols of the time and who moves from depression into madness, can stand for all of South African society. This is a book that despite being decades old will stay with you.
