A Town Like Alice has all the ingredients for a most remarkable book: strong characters, plot development based on fact, and the intrigue offered by foreign lands. Years ago, I saw the Australian mini-series of this novel, and was enthralled. I read the book at that time, and loved it. Recently, after a few decades, I reread the account and was even more impressed. I definitely want to read other works by Nevil Shute. I most highly recommend A Town Like Alice.

A different look at the results of war
This book is a bit difficult to read due to the language of the era, but the story is very interesting. It demonstrates what determination and common sense can accomplish.
