Seller's Description:
Portsmouth. 1991. Heinemann. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. 0435080253. 332 pages. paperback. keywords: Literature Islam Africa. FROM THE PUBLISHER-For nearly a millennium Islam has been present in sub-Saharan Africa, profoundly marking the culture, society, and religion of more than a third of the continent. In spite of this fact, critics oddly perpetuate the notion that black African literatures are an amalgam of traditional African and Western literary cultures. Islam has been ignored, unseen, or glossed over. And yet, in the works of many prominent African writers Islam provides the key component. This volume represents the first attempt in English criticism to redress the imbalance that has existed in contemporary scholarship. These essays restore to its proper place the role of Islamic tradition in the study of African literature, focusing on Islam in the works of many African authors including Camara Laye, Cheikh Hamidou Kane, SembEne Ousmane, Birago Diop, and HampåtE Bå. In addition, there are special studies on Islam in Songhay epics, Swahili and Somali poetry, Senegalese film, on the role of Sufism and Mouridism, with broader comparative analyses including Said's Orientalist approach, and the role of women. Two historical essays on East African and West African Islam provide the volume with essential contextual information as well as the disciplinary approaches needed to complement purely literary criticism. What emerges with force from these varied approaches is that ' 'Islam' is not a single entity whose presence can be simply dissected and analyzed in essentialized form. The two historical essays make it clear that Islam was not a monolithic force that entered the virgin territory of African soil from its Arabic homeland. Rather, Islam grew in Africa, as elsewhere, multifoliated, rich, competitive, and dense, and nowhere identical with its form in other reaches. To locate Islam in African literature is to dislocate a multiplicity of faces, and to constitute anew the contours of African literary discourse.
