Excerpt from The Manuscripts of the Earl of Ashburnham: Report to the Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts A year or more has passed since this brilliant article was written by M. Delisle, and during that period Lord Ashburnham has parted with some of his mss. The Stowe collection went to the, British, Museum for while the Italian government secured for the_sum of some few Dante mss. From the collection known as the Appendix, and all of the Libri mss., excepting those which M. Delisle has proved to have been stolen from French depositories; these it declined to purchase. It has been said that the Earl of Ashburnham is looking to this country as a likely market for the sale of the remainder of his collection, which is known to contain many stolen doc uments. This translation has been published and is sent to all of our leading libraries as a means of warning their custodians that the odium which now attaches to these mss. Will follow them even to this country. A few copies have also been sent to some of the principal newspapers with the hope that some words of disparagement may be said by them which will deter any probable American purchaser from acquiring them until they have been cleansed of the stain which now pollutes them, and which can only be done by giving to France the chance to regain her stolen and mutilated treasures.
