Excerpt from M. Tullii Ciceronis Ad Quintum Fratrem Dialogi Tres De Oratore: Cum Excerptis Ex Notis Variorum The text of this edition of Cicero de Oratore, with a few inconsiderable exceptions, is that of Ernesti. The edition of Dr. Carey has furnished some corrections in the punctuation. In selecting notes, it was at first in tended to give short extracts from the principal commen taries on this work, especially those of Proust, Olivet and Ernesti, as scholia to the more difficult passages; a mode ofillustration, as was thought, well adapted to the wants of those, who usually read this treatise in the course oftheir education. After a considerable portion of the text was printed it was determined, at the suggestion of the publishers, to give a part of the notes in English. The number of Latin notes is less, than was at first con templated. The whole number of notes is small; and it is recommended to the student, in reading this work, to have by him the Clanis Ciceroniana of Ernesti; as with this help properly used, be will seldom be left in doubt as to the meaning of his author. It will be observed, that, in the notes, no account is given ofthe orators, po ets, philosophers and historians, whose names so fre quently occur in these dialogues. Such accounts have been omitted, as the student can easily find them in a classical dictionary. J. L. K. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
