Excerpt from The Phase I Archeological Research Program for the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, Vol. 1: Objectives, Methods, and Summaries of Baseline Studies Archeological interest in the Knife River Indian Villages dates back more than a century. Shortly after establishment of the town of Stanton, North Dakota, an archeologist from Minneapolis, Theodore Lewis, visited the villages clustered about the mouth of the Knife River and drew sketch maps of them (wood l986az49) Prior to World War I, the State Historical Society of North Dakota employed a local surveyor to make detailed maps of the same villages, and in the 19203 the Society entertained the idea of acquiring the sites to set them aside as archeological preserves. Unfortunately, the Society was not able to accomplish this. Today we owe a great debt to the foresight of local landowners who have conscientiously preserved these archeological sites over the years, making it possible for ourselves and future generations to appreciate them as an historical and scientific resource.
