I love the Victorian Era, and Scotland Yard, and detective stories. I love seeing the good guys portrayed as intelligent, insightful, and even lucky at times when luck is needed. All of this is wrapped in this novel about the early days of Scotland Yard, a time without the internet, cell phones. and other modern conveniences. It shows the characters, the detectives, their families and friends, and how it all intertwines to make them into beloved friends who you end up rooting for in the end. They aren't perfect, just like real life, but those imperfections make them so much more real. I loved this book, and only picked it up at HPB on a whim. It was my lucky day.
